Andover Highlights
Settled in 1761, Andover consists of four villages: Cilleyville, Potter Place, East Andover and West Andover. In 1848, Proctor Academy was founded which is the prestigious institution around which the town’s economy is based. Andover is noted for its antique shops, Greek Revival architecture, two covered bridges, and a one-room schoolhouse, all of which you will enjoy. Potter Place Railroad Station, built in 1874, is one of the best preserved surviving 19th century railroad stations and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It serves today as a museum for the Andover Historical Society. Other museum buildings include an early 20th century railroad freight house displaying harvesting tools; a restored village store; a post office and the Tucker Mountain School House. History tells us that this one-room schoolhouse, with its small wooden frame was built in 1837 and was used until 1893. The desks are bolted to the floor (which sloped slightly) to afford students in the rear of the room a better view of the front. The walls are painted black. They were used as chalkboards. After soaking up some interesting history in this lovely town, the Blackwater Junction Restaurant, The Refinery or The Kitchen will generously fill your appetite. Great food; great atmosphere. Come in and relax.
