Bethlehem Highlights

On Christmas Day in 1799, this town was named Bethlehem. People continue to send their mail to the post office here in time to get the cancelled stamp! Once considered a resort area for the rich and famous, 30 hotels lined the streets. With its high elevation, people came here to relieve their allergy symptoms. There is even a sign in the village that says, “Highest Town in NH.” Numerous artists reside here because of the exquisite landscape. Interesting stories are available from a group of artists (the White Mountain Artists) that will peak your interest as you read about their time spent in Bethlehem. You will find two state forests here. Cushman State Forest has beautiful wetlands and hardwood trees while Strawberry Hill State Forest has trails that are considered a local secret as they are quite undisturbed. The Society for the Protection of NH Forests have continued to uphold their promise to the donors of Rock Estate, a 1400 acre piece of property that is called “The Rocks.” Their promise has been kept for many years which is to keep the property pristine and to always raise some sort of crop. With its rambling stone walls, restored buildings, beautiful gardens for short, easy strolls or taking long walks, a wildlife habitat, (and they even sell Christmas trees) you won’t want to miss this! The Colonial Theater (1915) was voted by Yankee Magazine as the “best vintage movie theater.” It continues to show independent and world cinema films. Bethlehem is a hidden gem that will welcome you. Come and see what I mean!
