Canterbury Highlights
Incorporated in 1741, Canterbury was once a militia timber fort and trading post with the Penacook Native Americans. Best known for the Canterbury Shaker Village, with its most intact and authentic surviving Shaker community, you are able to browse in a museum which was founded in 1969 and relive history. Shaker Village is a National Historic Landmark for its architectural integrity and significance. To wet your appetite, The Shaker Table is a restaurant at Shaker Village that you won’t want to miss. Then, fashioned like an English Pub, Canterbury Aleworks awaits. It is a brewery, located off the beaten path, which once was a working barn. Don’t forget to look for Brookford Farm, where 100% grass-fed products and organic vegetables are for sale. Also, Hackleboro Orchards, a “New England Farm Experience” which has apple picking, animals to pet, a farm store and even a short observation tower to climb. Amidst all of this are two state forests -- Ayers and Shaker -- for hiking and enjoying.
