Effingham Highlights
Located on the Maine border and only 20 minutes away from Ossipee, this small, rural town is charming. The Lord’s Hill Historic District, just north of Effingham center, is on a grand hill and offers a well-preserved village from the 18th and 19th century. Along a dead-end, dirt road, two wooden houses still stand. A very interesting story about the Hobb’s family explains the importance of these two homes. One, a simple farmhouse (Hobb’s Farmhouse). The other is a grand mansion (Lord’s Hall Mansion). As grand and intriguing as the mansion is, the Hobb's Farmhouse is a “vital reminder of life truly lived in isolation in northern New England two centuries ago.” Pine River State Forest invites you to bird watch, picnic, swim at roadside beaches, fish, and hike the three hiking trails. Heath Pond Bog Area makes its home in Effingham. It is an area of wetlands with many birds and wildflowers. If you desire a quiet and relaxing small town, Effingham is waiting for you.
