Errol Highlights
Errol was incorporated in 1836. With vast forests, the chief occupation was lumbering. Dixville Notch was the “First in the Nation” to hold the presidential primaries which began here in 1920. Errol may seem small, but it has a huge world of fun waiting just for you. Whether you enjoy calm walks or more exciting river excursions, something is here for everyone. Androscoggin Wayside Park is located on the river and invites you to the Thirteen Mile Woods scenic area. The park has free admission, is open year-round and offers a lovely picnic area, canoeing and fishing. Dixville Notch State Park leads you to trails to Huntington Cascades. Umbagog Lake State Park is a gorgeous place to explore. With plenty of trails for hiking, great water activities like kayaking and canoeing, there is so much to do. There are even campsites that can only be reached by paddle!! Lake Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge, spanning 7,000 acres of untouched wilderness, is a stop you will definitely want to make. Birds like osprey, loon, great blue heron and even bald eagles await your visit (and your camera!) You might even see a moose! Roost Trail, a moderately steep, forested trail, ends at a cliff with a superb view overlooking the refuge. Anyone that loves the great outdoors will be very content here. It is an incredible place to enjoy nature’s beauty. Restaurants and lodging are available in Errol where you will find delicious home-cooked meals and comfy beds after a very busy day.
