Jackson Highlights
This town was originally named New Madbury after the seacoast town of Madbury. In 1772, a road was built through the Pinkham Notch and the area was settled in 1778. In the 1800s, the community was renamed in honor of President John Adams who was in office at that time. The name stuck until the town was incorporated in 1829, when Andrew Jackson was inaugurated as president. Thus, the name Jackson. Being one of the region’s most picturesque villages, famous in part for Jackson Falls and Jackson X-C, a 150+ kilometer cross-country skiing trail system, Jackson is also best known for Honeymoon Bridge, a lovely red covered bridge that was built in 1876. Also rated “best in the world” is Wildcat Mountain, with a view of Mount Washington that is unsurpassed in its beauty. Jackson is a favorite for alpine skiing as well. Hiking during the summer, skiing and snowshoeing in the winter….you will love it here. Located in the heart of the White Mountains and a perfect spot for a leisurely summer/winter weekend getaway, you will find many quiet, romantic inns to relax and enjoy. Or, if you prefer, busy, skier-packed hotels, all of which feature classic New England charm. Numerous restaurants, with scrumptious food, will warmly open their doors to welcome you. Whether you like fresh garden salads, seafood, steaks, homemade cooking, pizza...fine dining or just a quick lunch or dinner, Jackson has it. Come and visit. Stay a few days. You will be glad you did!
