Ossipee Highlights
Once the site of a stockade fort to protect the Ossipee from the Mohawks, Ossipee was known as Wigwam Village, then New Garden, and finally named Ossipee after the Native Americans in this area. Artifacts can still be found on the Indian Mound Golf Course. The railroad brought commerce to the area, resulting in the development of a summer resort. A converted railroad station (now a restaurant with excellent reviews, offering seafood and a friendly atmosphere) reminds us of the importance of the history stemming from this railroad. Ossipee Lake, with its clean water for fishing, swimming, and boating is a sheer delight. Ossipee Lake Trail, a 22 mile ride, crossing several towns (and a lovely covered bridge) is something worth experiencing. At the southern end of Lake Ossipee, you can enjoy a short walk to a beach and see “the best view of Mt. Chocorua in the area.” Ossipee Mountain, a small, circular mountain range, features many summits and ancient remains of a volcanic ring dike (a cauldron-like formation from a volcanic eruption). Restaurants including one with a beer garden (and a fire pit), ice cream shops and many other options are waiting for you in Ossipee.
