Springfield Highlights

When you ask a resident of Springfield why they like it in Springfield, their answer will be, “because they love the uncrowded living conditions, quiet and undisturbed lifestyle, scenic and unpolluted natural environment. They work hard and enjoy the place where they live.” Once called Protectworth, this small hill town originated in 1794. Springfield was once home to mica mines that produced quartz. Paul Burroughs, known for cutting the Star Quartz Sphere, one of the finest in the world, used the quartz found here to make the famous sphere. The sphere is now housed in the Natural Museum in Washington, DC. Gardner Memorial Wayside Park, which is located in Gile State Forest, invites visitors to a half- mile hiking trail, a babbling brook to fish and many hours of outdoor fun. McDaniels Marsh Wildlife Management Area, with its peaceful, diverse wetlands and wildlife, offers canoeing and kayaking. Lodging and restaurants are just a short drive from Springfield. You might just find a hidden treasure along the way!
