Tilton Highlights
Charles E. Tilton, the town’s wealthiest resident, made his fortune in the West, supplying goods to miners during the California Gold Rush and later in real estate, banking and railroads. A mansion on the hill overlooking Main Street was built for his home. The elegant residence, almost unchanged, is now part of Tilton School. It houses the library. The attached carriage house is now the Art Center. A granite marker near Island Park was a gift from Tilton. A number of statues plus a historical arch can be found in the center of town. An iron bridge, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, because of its innovative truss design, elegant brick buildings, a charming gazebo, where free band concerts are held on Sundays during July and August -- all are well-kept and are memorable. Elaborate Victorian homes, spectacular restaurants, gorgeous churches, unique shops, a brewing company and so much more are here in Tilton.
