Windham Highlights
Windham was initially home to Pawtucket Native Americans. Scottish immigrants began to settle in the area in 1719. Because of a large tract of land when the first settlers arrived (which was covered with chestnut, oak and similar trees), the region was known as “Nutfield.” History abounds with a castle, The Searles Castle, built during 1905-1915, is constructed of imported marble and artifacts from Europe. Built by the finest masons and woodworkers, this is something you will not want to miss. It is phenomenal! Attractions such as parks, golf courses, fishing, boating, bike trails, and even waterfront access can be found in Windham. Griffin Park has baseball and soccer fields, tennis courts and a lovely playground. Cobbetts Pond, with Windham’s town beach, is open to the public. The Windham Rail Trail, which extends from Windham to Derry, is a 4-mile paved trail (level) for walking and biking. As in every NH town, the scenery is picturesque, the history is prevalent, and the people are warm and friendly. Windham is no exception.
