Two villages share the town of Gilmanton — Gilmanton Corners and Gilmanton Ironworks, both which are quiet and charming. This is a town, rich in history, where the residents are extremely proud of their elementary school. Gilmanton Academy, built in 1864, has been well preserved since the 18th century. The unique cupola at the academy, adorned with stunning architecture is iconic. Crystal Lake has yearly festivals during the summer months, water sports and great fishing. Many trails for dirt biking, four-wheeling, hiking and outdoor activities are also available in Gilmanton. Griswold Scout Reservation offers a two, eight week summer scouting camp. It is believed that the book “Peyton Place” by Grace Metalious, a story of three women struggling with their identity, has its fictitious setting here.
