Learn more about Mont Vernon
Set at the crest of a beautiful hill, this small, rural town broke away from Amherst in 1803. This was due to a dispute over a town parish. Agriculture was their main industry. Agriculture was replaced with Mont Vernon becoming a tourist destination during the 1800s. Five large summer hotels were built at that time. Until the 1930s, one of the hotels was still standing until it burned from a lightning fire. The “Grand Hill” (as some people call Mont Vernon) is home to a 160 year old General Store which is “keeping an eye on the details of the past with an eye to the future,” offering the finest selection of local products, handcrafted artisan wear, homemade baked goods and much, much more. Something you won’t want to miss is Purgatory Falls, which is well known for its beautiful waterfall that flows into a steep gorge/ravine. It will leave you in awe. There are beautiful hiking trails, great ponds for fishing, and many other adventures waiting for you at Mont Vernon.
