Learn more about Newbury
Newbury has gone through numerous name changes over the years. Its first name was Dantzic, then Hereford, then Fishersfield and finally, in 1837, when the town was incorporated, it was named Newbury. It is home to part of Lake Sunapee which includes one of the most prominent parks, Sunapee State Park. Combining the fun of Lake Sunapee, with the adventures of the mountains, you can enjoy a network of hiking trails that cross the park to connect the Sunapee-Ragged-Kearsarge-Greenway with the Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway. FYI — protection efforts have enabled Lake Sunapee being consistently named one of the cleanest lakes in the state. The John Hay National Wildlife Refuge, part of 876 acres, protected by a country estate named The Fells, makes its home in Newbury. Also known as The Hay Estate, The Fells rests upon 83.5 acres of land made up of forests, trails, picturesque gardens and nature preserves. It is a place of beauty and tranquility. A ‘must see.’ The Bell Cove Historic Caboose Museum, with its bright red vintage caboose, surprisingly appears as you come upon the Newbury Information Booth. Memorabilia from the B&M Railroad (operated from the 1870s to the 1950s) can be found at this amazing sight. Fantastic restaurants are in Newbury as well…Bubba’s Bar and Grille, Marzelli Deli, Salt Hill Pub Shanty, Mountain Spirits Tavern Cafe to name just a few. Plan to stay a few days? The 1806 Inn at Sunapee B&B is nestled in the mountains and lets you enjoy the quiet. The Mountain Edge Resort and The Lake Inn at Mount Sunapee, both invite you to their porch for breathtaking views of the lake. So much to see. . . so much to do!
