Plainfield is a small town, which includes the village of Meriden, and definitely takes extreme pride in its history. Main Street continues to be lined with buildings that were built during the 1800s-1900s, most of them still in excellent condition due to the residents consistent support in preserving the town’s historical resources. The Plainfield Historic Society has a growing collection of artifacts, photos and offers monthly speakers. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Town Hall (1846), having a stage backdrop painted by Maxfield Parrish, a famous Plainfield artist, adorns this cute little town. The Helen Woodruff Smith Bird Sanctuary (the first of its kind in the country) and Annie Duncan State Forest both invite you to enjoy 32 acres of gentle terrain, towering pines, several paths, and birdhouses of all kinds. Kimball Academy, built in 1813, well-renowned, private 9-12 boarding school, makes its home in Plainfield. Practicing “place based” education which allows the natural surroundings to be the classroom, it is one of the oldest boarding schools in the nation.
