Pownal Highlights
Pownal is the most southwestern town in Vermont. It is very small, with many farms, but is considered to be “in the middle of everything” as one resident described it. Cotton and woolen mills were the foundation of this town in the 1800s. Lime quarries were another source of income until 1936. A town with five churches is unusual but not for Pownal. They are a very proud community. Citizens have long prided themselves on their independent spirit and hold disagreements in mutual respect to create a culture of unity. The Defoe Mooar~Wright House, circa 1750, is one of the oldest houses in Vermont. Some believe that the house was built by the Dutch, and others believe that it was built by John Defoe, a British loyalist imprisoned there. Wonder which it was? The Green Mountain Race Track was very active between 1963 until 1977. At present, this large venue holds rock concerts, antique car shows and many other events. Hiking, camping and many other activities can be found in Pownal. Come and see for yourself!
